My older daughter is dressing up as “the universe” for Halloween and requested a necklace of planets to accessorize her Galaxy Bubble Dress. I agreed even though I had no idea how I would make one. I was completely stumped until I chanced upon a marbled glass ball ornament that reminded me of the swirling gas atmospheres of Jupiter and Saturn. Ding! Ding! I had it figured out.
I found clear plastic ball ornaments at Michaels and chose four colors of acrylic paint that coordinated with her dress. I had never made marbled glass ball ornaments so I read several online tutorials and watched this excellent video to learn how. Once the paint was dry, I super-glued the caps onto the ornaments. I decided that I did not like the silver color of the caps and painted them with black, glitter nail-polish. Finally I strung them onto a piece of purple t-shirt yarn from my stash.
My tips for drying the ornaments quickly:
- carefully tap out as much excess paint as possible, I did it directly into the kitchen sink so clean up was breeze
- set up a fan to blow air directly over the openings of the ornaments
Miss Imp is more than happy to wear the psychedelic butterfly costume that Juju wore when she was two. Lucky me, I only had to make one costume this year!
Wishing everyone a safe and fun Halloween!
